Ava Addams was born Alexia Roy on September 16, 1979, in Gibraltar. She moved to the United States at age four, settling in Houston, Texas, where she spent her childhood as a self-proclaimed Goth girl with an early interest in modeling and performance. Her French and Italian heritage comes from her parents, who now live in France, and she is fluent in English, French, and Spanish.

She began posing for nude and fetish shoots in 2004 at age 23, including work with Playboy, before transitioning into adult film in 2008 after fellow performer Renna Ryann introduced her to Reality Kings.
